LAMP GETS $432,000 GRANT...At an assembly held Monday, November 30, State Representative Greg Wren presented Loveless Academic Magnet Program High a $431,600 grant to replace 218 old windows at the school with newer, more energy efficient models. The project should be completed in four months.
The grant is part of the $5 million economic stimulus grants recently awarded by Governor Bob Riley to 70 schools in 14 public school systems to save energy and reduce utility bills by upgrading equipment and making other improvements. The funds, which are administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, were made available as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Loveless Principal Liz Norman said replacing the windows and making other building improvements to the 86-year-old school was one of her chief goals when she was named principal three years ago.
Though her students have received national recognition for their academic achievements, the building itself wasn’t making the grade. “The old windows made it very difficult to heat classrooms in the winter and cool rooms in the summer,” Norman said. “Now, our students will be more comfortable and we will be conserving energy.”
