Please Consider Supporting MPS

Superintendent Barbara Thompson, Mayor Todd Strange, County Commission Chairman Elton Dean, and other community leaders joined together to promote a new program to purchase supplies for students.

“Our budget has been cut by $28 million dollars in just the last few months,” said Thompson. “The state cut funding for classroom supplies. The school system has contributed money, but we are to the point that it is necessary to appeal to the public to help support out teachers.”

There are over 2,000 teachers in MPS classrooms. Many use personal funds to purchase supplies.

Strange and Dean urged citizens to participate. “We’d like to raise $100,000 in donations to provide support for our students,” said Strange. “We have always been a community that comes together in a time of need. This is one of those times.”

Dean agreed. “Even a small donation can help purchase critical supplies for classrooms. Every cent will go to schools to purchase paper, markers and items the children need each day.”

Donations can be made at any Regions branch in Montgomery County.  Regions Area President Artur Ducote added, “It is a simple process to donate. Just go to any Regions bank, give your donation to one of our staff, and tell them it is to help purchase classroom supplies for our schools.”

Representatives from Regions Bank, Service First Bank, Eddie Stiver Ford, and Max Federal Credit Union presented donations totaling $30,000 to the fund.

“We’ve made great strides this year in our schools,” added Thompson. “We made 98% of our AYP goals, opened new schools, built partnerships, started career academies, added prekindergarten sights, added Advanced Placement classes, and had several schools recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and national publications as being among the best in the nation. However, we are plagued by a budget that won’t cover our needs. We are asking the citizens of Montgomery to help us keep the focus on the children and their needs.”
