Building Sciences

The Building Sciences Academy will uses the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum to prepare students for careers in the construction industry. The demand for skilled workers is ever growing, especially with the boom in local construction. Industry and business are committed to providing relevant experiences for students and staff. Learn by doing. Students will be taught safety, site layout, concrete forms, residential and commercial framing and finish, project supervision and project management. Students will be prepared for an entry- level position in construction or to carry their education further in a post-secondary setting. In addition, students will use the computer-assisted design (CAD) to read blueprints, modify building plans and learn to create their own construction designs. Students will also be eligible to participate in the summer mentoring program. This is a program that partners with TCU Consulting and WK Upchurch Construction to give juniors an opportunity to actually work for a contractor in a construction management capacity. These students are paid in contrast with job shadowing. Real-life application will allow students to develop the critical thinking skills and technical skills necessary to become productive life-long learners in Montgomery’s fastest growing construction community. Particular emphasis is given to the use of decision-making and problem solving techniques in applying science, mathematics, communication, and social studies concepts to technological problems. Additionally, instruction and training are provided in the proper care, maintenance, and use of tools and equipment. Students will be introduced to local, state, and federal safety and environmental regulations. Being involved in our community is also stressed in The Building Sciences Academy. We build dollhouses for the annual Habitat for Humanity’s Tiny Homes of Hope. We partner with The Graphics Design Academy for our Skills/USA food drive, which donated over one thousand pounds of food to the Montgomery Food Bank this year.
